Early electronic cigarettes had a 3-piece configuration – battery, atomizer and cartridge. The cartridge is a small plastic container stuffed with filler material meant to absorb the e-liquid and feet it to the atomizer. Although the original 3-piece design was the industry standard just five years ago, it soon became obsolete, and the cartridge was replaced with a ‘cartomizer’, a simpler e-cigarette component that contained both the e-liquid and the atomizer.
There are still some 3-piece vaporizer models available on the market today, but they are widely viewed as inefficient or too cumbersome to use by casual vapers. Just assembling the unit is time consuming for inexperienced users, not to mention extremely messy.
