Early in 2018, as the vaping world was going back to simple yet efficient devices, vape pens were getting a lot of attention and companies were competing to launch their versions faster than the other. But the pod systems came along and everyone quickly forgot about vape pens. Well, not everyone, as some companies continue to believe they were viable. Vaporesso was one such company. In February of this year they launched the Sky Solo Plus, a vape pen kit featuring ample battery life and an e-liquid capacity of 8ml!

A Look at the Contents

The packaging for the Sky Solo Plus kit isn’t all that impressive – a rather flimsy cardboard box with a large picture of the vape pen on the front, and a short description, technical specifications, a list of contents , and manufacturer contact information on the back.

Inside the box we have the Sky Solo Plus battery unit and the “half tank” that screws onto it, as well as two coil-heads and a micro-USB cable. It’s not the most impressive starter kit, especially because it doesn’t come with a spare glass. Having shattered a few tanks over the last decade, I know how important a spare can be in a crisis. But if that doesn’t bother you, it has all the essentials you need to start vaping.

Design and Build Quality

At first sight, the Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus doesn’t look too different than other vape pens I’e reviewed in the past, like the Eleaf iJust 3 or the SMOK Stick Prince, but as we know, looks can be deceiving. Where most vape pens, including the ones I already mentioned, are made up of a tubular battery unit and a separate sub-ohm tank, the Sky Solo Plus has the base of the tank built into the battery unit, so only the top section of the tank and the glass are detachable. This was the first such device I’ve ever used, so it took a bit of getting used to.

Anyway, apart from the unusual “half tank” thing, the Sky Solo Plus is pretty straightforward. You have a textured fire button that protrudes from the mod enough to be easily found with the thumb even if the user isn’t looking straight at it, and an LED ring around the button that lights up different colors when the button is pressed, according to the battery level.

Apart from some discrete branding, a micro-USB port opposite the power button and a tiny battery venting hole on the bottom of the mod, there really aren’t other design aspects worth mentioning. In terms of build quality, the Sky Solo Plus feels like a solid device, but I’ve only been using it for a week and half, so I can’t speak about how it holds up over long periods of time. So far, so good…

Now, about the whole half tank thing… It’s not the best thing I’ve seen from Vaporesso, I will say that much. First of all, and the thing that bothers me most about this system is the the set airflow. Because the base of the tank is built into the battery section, there is no way to adjust the airflow, so you are stuck with two massive, wide-open airflow slots. Not only are they extremely loud, but they provide too much airflow, at least for me.

Another thing that bothers me about this unusual configuration is the risk of e-liquid leaks. Sub-ohm tanks are prone or leaking, and while Vaporesso usually makes very nice products, their tanks are no exception. I’ve had no issues with the Sky Solo Plus yet, but I have seen quite a few people complain on Reddit about their own mods leaking. With a regular vape pen, you just unscrew the tank and deal with the leaking without having juice drip all over the mod, but with this thing, you can’t do that. You either let all the juice flow through the airflow slots, or take the glass section apart to remove the juice yourself. Either way, it’s not going to be pretty.

I just don’t get the design, I really don’t, but if there’s something I’m missing, I’d love to have someone explain it to me.

Anyway, at the top we have a one-piece top cap, which basically means the wide bore drip tip is fused to the plastic top cap, which screws off to reveal a large kidney-shaped fill-port. The drip-tip is comfortable enough, but if you’re the type of vaper who likes to match their setups with their favorite drip tips, know you are not going to be able to do that withe the Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus.

But the weird tank does have some things going for it. First of all the e-liquid capacity. The Sky Solo Plus holds up to 8ml of e-liquid, which is a-lot for any type of vape setup, let alone a vape pen. The two included coil-heads are not bad at all either, but more on that below.

Battery Life and Performance

The Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus, like most of the other vape pens I’ve reviewed, has a battery capacity of 3,000mAh. That sounds decent enough, and it does provide enough battery life, but remember that this thing has a power output of up to 90 watts, so it won’t last everyone an entire day. If you like to chain vape, you’ll be glad to know that the Sky Solo Plus has passthrough functionality, meaning you’ll be able to vape while it’s charging.

As I already mentioned, the LED ring around the power button acts as a battery life indicator. Green means you have over 50% battery life, blues means the battery level is under 50%, and red means you only have 10% battery left and you need to recharge.

Performance wise, I’ve had no technical or leaking issues with the Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus, but that doesn’t mean all those complaints I’ve read online are false. Most often than not, it all comes down to the quality of the coil-heads, if they don’t seal the juice inside, the tank will start to leak. The device itself is working fine, but because of a coil-head defect, you end up criticising the whole setup. I’m not finding excuses for Vaporesso, though, as the coil-heads are their responsibility as well.

But when everything is working right, the Sky Solo Plus delivers a very strong vape. And I mean that literally. This is not a regulated device, so on a freshly charged battery, you are getting a lot of power. The Sky Solo is powered by Vaporesso’s Omni Board Mini, which activates the battery the moment you press the fire button. Power ramp up is impressive as well, and because you can’t close down the airflow at all, you’re going to get a mouthful of warm vapor when you take your first draw.

The power of the Sky Solo Plus and the nonadjustable airflow took some getting used to, I’m not going to lie, and I do feel like the one thing that’s missing here is the ability to close down the airflow. The draw is way too airy for me, and even though it doesn’t feel turbulent at all, it is very loud, to the point where you may annoy the people around you.

Vapor production is amazing, but I wasn’t really expecting too much from the Vaporesso GT meshed coils in terms of flavor. They managed to surprise me, though, delivering a very flavorful vape. I’ve been using the same donut-flavored juice I’ve been using for all my reviews over the last six months, and the flavor was among the best I’ve ever had.

Conclusion

The Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus tries to do some things differently, but not necessarily better. The different tank configuration doesn’t work better than the classic one, in my opinion, on the contrary, it only makes it impossible to adjust the airflow and increases the risk of e-liquid leaking onto the battery unit. That said, it does perform very well, putting out insane amounts of vapor and great flavor, so if the “half tank” thing doesn’t bother you, give it a try.

Yes I agree with you I wish I had not bought this ! It’s like trying to smoke a volcano as it gets so hot and spits out the liquid and smoke comes out of the air flow . I am to frightened to put my mouth around the tip incase I burn my throat .
    DO NOT BUY THIS VAPE

This is a decent starter vape. I, myself, have NOT had it leak on me. Although if your picky on airflow I’d recommend an alternative.

I just bought this, literally half an hour ago. I can’t speak to his long-term durability, or the possibility of leaks in the future although it’s not doing so now. what I can say is it was $28 at my local tobacco shop. Is making very warm but delicious vapor. I’m far past my days a building coils I really being into vapor as a Hobby. I was looking for a plug and play vape solution with a large tank and a good battery and thus far it has not disappointed me at all. I’m very pleased with the device.

I just bought a Vaporesso sky Solo and it makes piping noises and it gets very hot very disappointed.

  • Charles says:

I just bought this today, the flavor is the best in this pen, it has not leaked but I’ll let you know in time. It hold 8ml of juice so 1 tank should last me the day, I just charged it so will see how long it takes. It does pop alot but I have not got burned. Did I mention the flavor this thing gives out.

I can’t get this thing to work for me at all. Yes it leaks but even worse, it doesn’t produce any vape, just hot cracking and popping, I have primed the coil and use 65/35 mix. Just to get 1 decent hit would be a result. Not a happy vaper!

Bought this a couple of months ago for $38aud and have had constant issues with the leaking.

I cleaned it out, multiple times, made sure everything was tight and still no solution. Personal recommendation is to do not buy.

No good leaking all the time!! Shit not vape sorry

  • Craig says:

It’s OK but battery life us poor imo. Neat design, easy to fill and easy to smoke but battery life lets it down imo

I agree with EVERYONE else. Leaks, leaks everywhere. Down the side of the pen, in my mouth. Blech! I’m soooo sorry I wasted my money on this piece of junk. And someone also mentioned the battery. A charge doesn’t last very long. I have to charge it 2-3 times per day. I hate this pen!
