Vape pod systems have become so popular these days that virtually every major company in the industry has at least one in its product lineup. Well, SMOK now has three of them. After the Badge and the pen-style Infinix, the Chinese manufacturer recently released the Novo pod, a compact and slick device that fits comfortably in the smallest of pockets, has decent battery life and can be used for both mouth-to-lung and direct lung vaping. Let’s check it out:

A Look at the Contents

The SMOK Novo comes in a tiny black cardboard box with a picture of the pod system on the front, and a short description of it as well as a list of kit contents, and the usual warnings, on the back. Company information and the authenticity scratch-and-check sticker are on the sides.

Inside the box, we have the Novo battery, two refillable pods, a very short micro-USB cable and a flimsy user manual. The fact that SMOK includes two refillable pods in this kit is a big pro, and a huge market advantage over the competition. Although two pods should be the industry norm, most companies still offer only one of them, so SMOK definitely deserves some praise for challenging the status quo.

Design and Build Quality

The SMOK Novo is one of the smallest, most compact pod systems I have ever used. Measuring only 88.3mm x 24.3mm x 14.3mm, the Novo is basically the same size and shape as a classic cigarette lighter, which means it even fits snugly in your small jeans pocket. It’s marketed as ultra portable, and that description actually fits perfectly.

The Novo comes in a variety of vibrant colors, from pink to baby blue, and is made primarily of metal (not sure what type) and plastic. For this review, I received the rainbow version, which just like all the others, features a snakeskin pattern on both sides. Apart from a tiny battery life indicator, a micro-USB port and some branding, there’s really nothing worth mentioning about the design. There’s no screen, no buttons, as this is a draw-activated device, just a slick battery that connects to the refillable pods at the top.

The pods hold 2ml of e-liquid and feature a 1.2Ω coil. The mouthpiece is one of the nicest ones I’ve seen on a pod system. It has a narrow tip that both fits very comfortably in the mouth and doesn’t make you look funny when you draw either. The only issue I have with it is that it is made of opaque black plastic, and that makes it hard to check the e-liquid level inside.

Other pod systems, like the Mowell Shake or the Wismec Motiv 2 have slightly tinted pods that allow you to see exactly how much juice is left, especially if you tilt the device sideways. The opaque mouthpiece of the Novo pods and the fact that they slide into the battery almost completely, leaving only a slither of the clear tank exposed, makes it impossible to tell how much liquid you have left without removing the pod to check. That’s not a deal breaker for me, but SMOK’s designers could have definitely done a better job.

The Novo doesn’t have magnetic pods. Instead, they are press fit onto the battery. You won’t hear any clicks when you insert the pods, so try to make sure you push them in all the way. To refill the pods, simply pull out the rubber cap on the side of the tank to reveal the fill port. It’s not the largest filling hole I’ve ever seen, but it’s decent. At least it fits my small droppers and most unicorn bottle needle tips, so I have nothing to complain.

One small con I noticed about these pods is that they don’t have a protective membrane covering the air hole on the bottom. I think all of the pod systems I’ve reviewed in the past have that, so I’m not exactly sure why SMOK decided not to add one, but you can literally see the coil and the cotton inside the pod if you look through that bottom air hole. That doesn’t mean that juice is going to leak right out (at least it hasn’t in my experience), but you do get some condensation on the battery.

That membrane that retracts whenever you draw on the mouthpiece and then seals the pod when you stop prevents both leaking and condensation, so SMOK may want to consider adding it to its pods.

All things considered, I think SMOK did a terrific job designing the Novo pod systems. Is it perfect? No, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. This thing is truly ultra portable, it’s comfortable to vape on and it comes with two pods.

Battery Life and Performance

SMOK claims that the Novo pod system has a 450mAh battery, which is hard to believe if you consider how small it is, so I am assuming that the true battery capacity is a bit lower than that, maybe around 400mAh, or even 350mAh. Even so it’s still in the average range for this type device, so I’m not going to complain about the battery life, instead I do want to point out that false advertising is definitely not ok.

To charge the Novo, simply connect it to a power source with a micro USB cable. I usually recommend using the one supplied by the manufacturer, but I am going to make an exception in this case, because it is so ridiculously short that you simply cannot use the device as a passthrough. And if you can’t vape on it while it’s charging, why implement vape-while-charging technology in the first place?

That’s right, you can vape on the Novo while it is charging, just not with the cable included in the box. I personally use another USB cable from one of my other pod systems, just to be safe.

The Novo features a tiny LED light that lights up blue every time you vape. When it’s time to recharge, that LED will start to blink and the battery will no longer activate. After you connect it to a power source, the LED will light up red while the device is charging, and will turn off when it is completely recharged. Like most other pod systems, the Novo takes about an hour to fully charge after its battery has been depleted.

Now, performance wise, I have mixed feelings about the SMOK Novo. On one hand, I love that when it’s fully charged it hits considerably harder that most vape pods I’ve used, delivering hotter vapor and a lot more of it. According to the official specs, the Novo puts out between 10W and 16W of power, depending on how charged the battery is.

But there are a lot of things I personally don’t like about how the Novo works. First of all, there is the whole mouth-to-lung and direct lung vaping compatibility. Essentially, what that means is that the draw on this thing is both airy enough to allow direct lung hits, and tight enough to be suitable for mouth to lung, if that makes sense. It’s a middle of the road kind of device, and I don’t like it.

If you want to make a direct lung pod system, that’s great, but don’t try hitting two birds with one stone, because it usually doesn’t work out very well. The first time I used the Novo, I could barely get it to activate the battery, because the long MTL-style draw didn’t work. You really need to put your lungs into it, so to speak, in order to fire this think up, or at least take a couple of primer puffs to heat up the coil. That’s if you want to follow them up with a MTL draw.

As for direct lung vaping, that’s not the best either, because the draw, while airy, doesn’t feel airy enough for that style of vaping. It does put out an impressive amount of vapor for a pod system, I will give it that. Bottom line, the draw is all over the place, so if you’re looking for a tight, cigarette-like draw, you’re not going to find it with this device.

Another big gripe I have with this device is the flavor. I have been using it consistently for over a week, and I’ve only just gotten rid of the atrocious taste I got when I first started using it. The best way I can describe it is as a plastic, medicine-like taste that seems to overpower my discrete tobacco juice. It tastes just like how that styrofoam holder that e-cigarettes usually come in smells. Ever take a whiff of the box your vapes come in? That’s how this thing tasted to me for a long time, and the mouthpiece actually reeked of it.

SMOK devices have always been known more for their vapor production capabilities than for the flavor they put out, but the Novo is probably the worst one I’ve ever tried. If I had used it with a more flavorful e-liquid I probably wouldn’t have mind it that much, but I would rather the vapor be tasteless than taste disgusting.

Conclusion

The SMOK Novo is already being praised as one of the best pod systems around, and in some respects I would agree with that. Sadly, as far as the vaping experience goes, I found myself liking the Novo a lot less than I thought I would. Between the awkward draw and the terrible taste I got from it for about a week, there just wasn’t a lot I liked about using it. There was the warm, dense vapor, I guess, but it wasn’t enough to compensate for all the negatives.

It’s unfortunate that the Novo didn’t perform as well as I had hoped, because it really has a lot going for it, like the design and the fact that it comes with two pods.

The SMOK Novo was sent to me for the purpose of this review by Vapesourcing.

I clean the novo over and over and still get consistent problems with firing after I have. Pods leak quite a bit.

I’m currently using the smok novo for a long 8 weeks and the only problem I found was you cannot smoke it empty. Otherwise the pod burns and you have to replace the pod. Since using the smok novo… I managed to quit smoking cigarettes altogether which was easy since using the device

    • Steve says:

Leaked from day 1 from both pods. Not happy. Juice burned in pod as well.

This is the worst pod vape I have ever used in 6 years of vaping. The Novo3 is superior in every way. The Novo pods never lasted more than 2 days, tried 3 kinds of juice and nic salts. Tried every pod available, and went through 7 pods in 2 weeks, first you can’t get a draw through them then they taste burned, I hate this vape with a passion. My Novo 3 pod is 2 weeks old and tastes better than the pro on day 1. I let the pro pods soak up juice from 1 hour to overnight. Do not buy this garbage.

Yes I agree this thing is the best pod system I have ever owned and I have quite a few. The NIC Salt is awesome and smooth. I got brainfreeze. It draws just like a cigarette for me and I love the vapor output. Can’t go wrong with this.

I agree that it has a lot of good stuff going, but bad taste is just the quality of e juice you get. Mine are perfectly fine. Yummy taste!

okay my problem is that every time i insert a pod it auto fires. ive tried cleaning it. and it still does the same thing. please any advice on how to fix this?

Check your pin connections and make sure their springy and not stuck is a solid position. I love the mod I have 4 of them, but one of them is really hard to draw from, it’s like it’s air tight, the airflow is to tight so I don’t insert the pod as tight and it works great now.

  • Chris Markcum says:

I purchased a smok novo. It lasted about 2 weeks then it started auto firing. Then it quit working. I used the warranty and wrote the manufacturer. I sent in pics and videos and still that wasnt enough proff to them they needed more. I just wanted my novo replaced and they couldn’t do that. I’m done with smok products. I will find another product to use.

Amazing product if you find it miss firing you have to take the pod off and clean the inside of the novo with a que tip once and awhile other than that great product

    • Esmok says:

I’ve purchased several. Within 2 weeks it’s done. I love the way it smokes but replacing it is as expensive as buying from big tobacco.

  • ZombieWriter says:

I bought 2 Novos last week. One stopped charging today. My first pod ended up burnt because I accidentally smoked it dry. I like the feel and draw but I don’t like the fact that you can’t see the juice. Will take the non-charging one back for a replacement and hope the new one lasts.

My own fault on the burnt pod, I should have checked it more often.

  • Cj says:

Just want to mention that small clear part is designed exactly so you can check the level without removing it. Just hold it sideways and you can see where the fill level is. Doesn’t need to be any bigger really.

  • Hannah says:

I’ve had this Novo Smok for about a month I was really pleased with it and just recently it has been spitting juice, I’ve done pretty much everything clean it daily, I’m not filling the pod full I put half or a quarter or salts in it and it kinda stopped the spitting but not fully I keep a close eye on it making sure I don’t burn it dry. It has helped me quit smoking cigarettes though which is a great bonus

Although I’m not liking the taste of the nicotine salts

Love the Smok Novo… Once I learned it’s little quirks. As for it spitting juice take the pod out, and blow really really hard through the pod. That should clear any oil out. The clean where the pod sits with a q-tip.

I’ve been vaping for 5 years, from an evod starter kit (2012) to an rx200 with alliance dripper. I still drip and also squank 3mg but also vape salt nic with a MYLE for that sleek slim line convenience. I got the Novo with a 12mg to get off salt. This thing works great! The review writer is sideways with his draw and flavor complaints although I agree I’d like to see the pod capacity. 4.5 of 5 stars from me!

I’m not sure what that flavor things about… just tried one for the first time a few days ago and it tasted better than basically everything I’ve tried so far. The hit is SO smooth and I love this so much. I understand that it’s small, which might get annoying, but I use my friend’s so I don’t have to deal with the daily keeping of it. For someone pretty new to vaping, I recommend this 100% it’s amazibg and you’ll love it.

i STARTED VAPING ON THIS THING. i STOPPED SMOKING CIGARETTES AS A RESULT.I haven’t had a cigarette in a month. I got my first one 2 months ago. I love this thing but it has become increasingly difficult to find pods. That is the only problem I have found with this device.

My friend and I both have a novo. She has recently gotten her 3rd one due to dropping it into a lake. Water damage causes the novo to spit, no matter how many tanks you use to replace. With her previous novo, it started firing all the time: she’d be carrying along normally and it would start firing in her pocket, as well as at night. I’ve recently experienced my novo firing and spitting (I’ve had it for about a month). My novo started leaking about 20 days into having it. My only suggestion would be to have them water proof, and as the text suggests, a cover for the top so you’re not having so much condensation build up. I have to remove the top when ever I use it in an effort to stop the condensation buildup( which never works) . Just hoping for a product that doesn’t “self destruct” due to random firing.

    • Zachari K says:

When it comes to an auto firing Novo, take your pod out and clean if completely. While the pod is out of the device, inhale on it to check to see if there any excess juice possibly stuck in the chimney of the pod. Grab some q-tips and kleenex and inhale decently hard on the device (with NO pod in). See if it’ll draw any leaked juice and condensation up. Check to see if it fixed the issue. If it still auto fires you have two options left. Take the pod out again and blow through the charging part. The light will flash sometimes, don’t worry about it. Keep doing that and check for any liquid. Clean it as much as possible and toss your pod back in. It might not hit the first few times. Don’t panic. Just flip the pod and try again. If it still auto fires, the best way to manage it for free is to simply not push the pod in all the way. Leave if a tiny bit lifted but enough for the connection to be made. You’ll figure out the perfect fit. Fixed my novo and did all of these things

i’m on about week 2 of mine. i went from one of the bigger push button/tank/adjustable watts vapes to this. mostly because it was cheap and SMALL. i’ve been loving it so far. it hits great and that was my main worry about it. guy at the vape shop really pumped it up as great and they’ve always been super straight with me about stuff. it’s weird going from a big tank to this little pod and needing to refill more than once a day, but i think the trade off in the small size is worth it. i also noticed it tasting…off…at first. it didn’t last a week for me, though. just through that first day. how long has a pod been lasting everyone? i feel like it’s time to change, but i’m not sure. i don’t want to change way too soon (even though the pods are cheap and it’s not a big issue), but nothing i’m seeing is giving any rough estimate on it. i only changed the atomizer on my old one once every month+, though, and i know people (in general) suggest changing them FAR more often than that. but…yeah. good vape! if you wanna ditch regular cigarettes, this is a great starter. it’s small, cheap, and hits well. cheap is the biggest plus IMO for that kind of thing. it’s hard to commit to a vape because of the initial investment, so this one being $20-$30 is a great price.

    • Boogie says:

I change mine every week but just make sure you let fresh poda sit in juice for hours before even trying to hit.. and prime puff on it a bunch before ever taking that first full draw. This will keep your cotton or w.e. from burning too quick. The bad taste everyone is talking about is that stuff burning in dry pockets where bubbles preserved the dryness.

After that just making sure you fill it back up when its at like 25% will keep your flavors perfectly preserved.

I’ve had my Novo for a little over a month now, no longer under the month long warranty, and of course it stops charging. It lights up red for a few minutes then the light disappears again. When I try to hit it, it just blinks like it hasn’t been charged. I left it on the charger for a few hours hoping it was just really dead and needed a while but no avail.

Mine did the same thing I found number one you should use the charger it came with. #2– and the biggest thing of all is: the part where you put the fluid in should be installed on the opposite side of your charging light. if it’s not it won’t work. I think you’ll see problem is solved. Don’t throw them away like I almost di. Let me know if that works…..I hope problem solved

    • Kelvin says:

As far as i am concerned , this pod is way better than the rest which i had tried, especially for someone like me who doesn’t want an electric or start up button to smoke.I am using the SMOK novo. I found it cool but just having an issue now which is the blue led light keeps blinking even the pod is fully charged.

      • Vranks says:

Have you tried using another pod? That one may have a faulty coil. If that doesn’t work (the mod still doesn’t fire) the battery may be damaged.

      • Aaron says:
        4 stars

I had the same problem just yesterday and it turns out a good cleaning and scratching the connection pins on the pod just a bit with my pocket knife did the trick. It wasn’t making a connection so it wouldn’t fire.

Just bought one today going from an Aspire Cobble, loved the cobble and the flavor was excellent in every coil, the taste of the novo coils seemed a little off at first but I looked past it for the first bit. However, it started bothering me more and more and now that it’s the end of the day it’s kind of driving me nuts. One of my buddies tried it tonight and couldn’t handle it, joking about it being like smoking a celery stick. I had an issue with the Suaron Drop where the coils that came with the battery fried fast but other ones worked ok. Are all the coils like this and it’s something you just get used to or will the individually packaged and sealed cartridges prove to be better than one ones that came with the device?

shit ducking sucks matter fact all ecigs suck. i’ve been on and off cigarettes for years due to the fact of the inability for these shitty providers to make a system that doesn’t break in one week. truthfully ecigs are just going to do more damage to you if they’re going to force you to be on and off cigarettes, the scar tissue from constant start and stop of smoking is worse then smoking everyday for your lungs fix themselves over and over. ecigs are actually shitty as hell and these companies really are more worried about marketing to children. i actually don’t give a fuck if the fda bans the sale of these shit devices anymore, it be for the better

So I have the Novo 3. I was looking for a post which talked about how to check juice levels.

I figured out that if you hold it sideways, you can easily see the level in the clear plastic line. Genius idea. I didn’t have any issues checking out.

So I came from using a tank device with a 1.8 ohm coil. One issue is with the 0.8 ohm coil, the Novo burns the liquid a bit. I use pure pg with nic, all flavorless and mix it myself. I get less headaches and issues this way and I think it’s safer.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say it’s I’m used to liquid heated at lower temperatures and so I’ve become very aware of the flavor. And I can really detect the slight burnt quality of the liquid heated at higher temps. In other words, I think it’s safer to use a higher ohm coil which will burn your liquid less.

I purchased 1.5 ohm pods that are marketed as Novo 1 and I put it in my Novo 3. While I do very slightly detect a chemical flavor, the burnt chemical flavor is way less. So the problem is pretty much solved. The Novo is one of the few high quality pods that allow for 1.5 Ohms so I think it’s one of the safest devices you can go with. Because in all the tests, it’s the higher burning temps that release there carcinogenic vapors.

Other than that I couldn’t be happier. I have mild arthritis so constantly holding my tank was making my hands sore. This lightweight solution was perfect and I am so happy to have found it.

On a side note I also tried the caliburn G. Unfortunately the highest ohm coils are 1.0. I have only tried 0.8 with the caliburn and it was even more burnt.

One other downside to the Caliburn G is the redundant annoying button that you can’t turn off. The Novo is way better in that you don’t have to worry about any button.

Overall I think this device is the best you can get if you want a safer vaping experience.

I disagree with the reviewer. It works wonderfully as both an MTL and a DTL device and I’ve loved the flavor above other pods and mods I own. What I ‘did’ notice was that he reviewed the rainbow. I loved my pink pod so much I ordered a second in rainbow. I can’t get that thing to draw well to save my life. I was sure it was a knockoff. After this review I’m not so sure! It could be a defective run? My pink and blue ones (bought a blue subsequently) work well, lots of vapor and great taste. I would recommend this to any vaper newbie or seasoned.

I recently purchased the novo a few days ago. I can honestly say this a pod device you have to learn how to use (if you tried other pod devices). The tight direct lung draw takes a little more inhale pressure to activate. The MTL draw on the other hand, is tricky to activate due to inhale pressure. I don’t like the MTL draw experience since it doesnt provide consistent firing activation.

The battery is another questionable note. I vaped the novo right out the box to fully deplete the charge then recharge. The first full charge took 35-40mins which caught my attention. The 1st charge depleted after only 1/3 of the tank was vaped. I had a full charge before going out then ran out of battery after only a few hours. I assume this is from direct lung draws. This draw will drain the battery quick. Still need to use the device more to get a more accurate experience.

Lastly, I notice there is airflow coming in from the USB port. Try covering the port during your draw and release your finger to feel if there is more resistance in airflow. If there is, I found you can get a more accurate power activation during the draw (which I found to be useful for MTL draws).

Overall, this device is not perfect for the experienced vapers. But can be for the people who are new to vaping. The battery life is my main concern. A more efficient MTL draw would make the battery last longer. I can recommend this device to anyone just be aware the battery may be questionable for you too.

I just stared the smok 3 weeks ago. I had a pod that didn’t want to hit and leaked the juice. It pooped a lot.I took it back to the vape shop I bought from and was told some time the pods can malfunction. Fortunately My vape shop stand by their product and replaced for free. They told me to make sure I use a q-tip to clean the pod holder(battery) and make sure there are not air bubbles in the pod. If a bubble is near the coil it pops more. Since learning this I check through out the day and keep the bubbles clear.(just pound it on your hand a little bit to shake bubbles to top) this helped me a lot. I see a lot of comments about the Novo spitting liquid into the mouth, bad flavor etc… I use this device a week now (used it couple months ago but went back to cigs) i found a way to clean the coil and replace the cotton… should i make a video about this?

I like it. It’s easy to fill and small enough to fit in pockets. Didnt notice a bad taste but I have a strong flavored juice. This is my first so I dont have anything to compare it to.

I have been buying disposables for over one year now and spending $20 a couple times a week. Today I bought the smok novo 420 999 and I don’t have to keep buying disposables. I’ve only had it today but so far I like it alot. I don’t love the juice I bought but I am going to get another I like the ones that say ice on them like banana ice or the word Frost like strawberry Frost. They have more of a menthol type tastes kind of an Icee taste. This device has worked well so far it has not stayed charged for very long that’s my only complaint I’ve charged it three times today. After about 2 hours I have to charge it again and I don’t use it that much maybe two Puffs every hour. I do love the size of it and the Simplicity of it. My disposable Vapes say 5% make salt

To finish up my review I want
To say that my disposables had 5% nicotine salt and these juices say 50 mg of nicotine salt. Are the juices that much stronger then what is in a disposable Vape?

I am using for three months now. Smok nova. I liked it for desigen, look and feel. Performance is not consistent at all once the charge reduces.
Biggest problem you will face leakage and juice coming in mouth as well. Due to leakage finally it will malfunction and u will become a half engineer by opening it, cleaning it, spray alcohol, read and view many vids, but once it starts blinking 15 times ,it just go to autoshut. Never buy air pressure based pod. Only buy those who has press buttons

This is the third device Nova bought it does not work properly, one of these devices exploded and fortunately was far from me, so I decided not to buy and use and why. The device is heated quickly producing poor quality

This is the second Novo Smok I have purchased. The first one lasted a few months – it worked fine, other than the leakage and spitting, until suddenly it stopped holding a charge. I figured it lasted me a few months that I would buy a second one. This one came right out of the packaging not charging. I will be returning it to the vendor today and buying something else. I would not purchase another Smok product. Very disappointing.

Piece of JUNK! Had mine about 3 weeks. Nothing but problems. Have spent around $120 for pods and juice to keep this thing going. Now permanently broke! I could go through the warranty and ship it back and wait who knows how long but instead I will throw it in the garbage where it belongs. Guess they don’t realize nicotine is addictive and waiting isn’t a great option. Have a few new pods and 2 bottles of juice if anyone wants them for free. That’s about what they’re worth.

This devise does not stay charged. The juice leaks in your mouth. It is difficult to pull on when I do sometimes only get air. The pods do not fit, the flavor release is nasty does not taste like the juice put in it. I would not recommend this nova to anyone.

These pods are always leaking. No matter what I do. I make sure the pod isn’t over filled. I won’t push the pod in all the way for more air flow. Nothing helps. My hands are always sticky from the leaking juice. ANY HELP?

I had about 5 different vape devices and the smok is the BEST. Smooth hit and the pods last longer than previous devices. HIGHLY recommended if you want a compact device that gives you a good and smooth hit. Best by far.

  • Hollye says:

I notice that when you take a pull while charging it you taste the E-juice, is that normal? A con for this device would be that it takes too long to charge.

i have bought 2 smoke novo’s in 3 months. the first one all it did was leak the jucie/oil till it broke 3 weeks after getting it. the 2nd one i bought was working great till about 4 days ago cause it lost charge. even after i left it on the charger for 24 hours. i will NEVER buy another one if my life depended on it. your brand really sucks.

The size and shape are perfect. It fits nicely in your hand. And also could easily be inserted into your prison wallet. So you could smuggle it into jail with no problem in case you ever get arrested.

  • Marie says:

I purchased the Novo 3 & love it. The major issue I have is the pod leaking. I’m wondering if the pod is supposed to be inserted into the battery a certain direction?
