The SMOK Alien 220W kit is the latest addition to a long series of top-quality vaping products from Chinese manufacturer SMOK, or Smoktech. Ever since they released the very popular X Cube 2, last year, this company has been putting out new and innovative devices at least once a month, without compromising on quality. The Alien kit is no exception, offering a high-power mod with maximum output of 220W and the new Baby Beast tank, which is a smaller version of the acclaimed TFV8 Cloud Beast. In this review, we’re going to take a close look at the  SMOK Alien kit, see how it performs and if it’s actually worth your hard earned cash.

A Look at the Contents

The Alien kit comes in the usual SMOK packaging – a big rectangular cardboard box sealed in plastic wrap – and contains the Alien 220W box mod, the TFV8 Baby Beast tank, two Baby Beast coil heads, a spare glass tube for the tank, a bag of spare o-rings, also for the tank, a USB update cable for the mod, and a user manual. As always, a generous offering from SMOK, but the one small detail they seem to have forgotten about is some plastic protection for the large OLED display of the mod. I’ve received three Alien kits for this review, and all three mods had small scratches on the display, which I think could have been avoided with a bit of plastic foil, like most smartphones come with nowadays. It’s not a huge deal, as the damage is barely noticeable, but it could have easily and cheaply been avoided.

Design and Features

The 220W Alien box mod is without a doubt the highlight of this kit. Having already reviewed about a dozen SMOK vaporizers over the last two years, I can say that this device is probably their best looking one yet. Measuring just 85mm in height, 44mm in length and 30mm in width, the Alien is surprisingly compact for a dual-18650 battery unit. Design-wise, it takes some cues from other popular mods, and, actually, one of the reasons I like it so much is because I think it looks a lot like the Vaporesso Target 75W, one of my all-time favorite vaporizers. The rounded corners, the design and positioning of the vent holes, even the zinc alloy case with the matte black finish, all remind me of Vaporesso’s gaming-controller-like device. If you’re a mod connoisseur, you’ll probably see a bit of the Siegelei 213 and the IPV4 in the design of the Alien, as well. On the other hand, SMOK’s new flagship does have quite a number of distinctive features that help it stand out from the competition.

One of these features is the firing bar that SMOK has been using on its devices as an alternative to the classic power button. It was introduced on the X Cube 2, and has since become a staple of SMOK design, having been used on the recently released H-Priv and OSUB Plus. The firing bar on the Alien is a bit different, though, both in the way it is seamlessly integrated into the overall design of the mod, and in how much stiffer it feels this time around. In my previous reviews of SMOK devices that used the firing bar mechanism, I always brought up the issue of accidental firing, either when holding the device in your hand or storing it in a tight pocket. Obviously, simply locking the device would prevent that from happening, but sometimes we just forget to do it. The firing bar on the Alien requires considerably more pressure to activate, so the odds of firing the device by mistake are really low. In fact, it’s so stiff that if you ease up on the pressure while vaping, it will sometimes cut the power. That might take a bit of getting used to, but it does fix the accidental firing issue.

Another distinctive feature of the Alien 220W is the huge OLED screen that displays a wealth of useful information that I have yet to see shown on any other mod. You have your current wattage/temperature setting, the selected SMOK vaping effect (Soft, Normal, Hard), the charge level of each 18650 battery, real-time voltage, the resistance of the atomizer, the amperage, the mode you’re using the mod in (wattage or temperature control), the temperature of the internal motherboard of the device, a puff counter, and, lastly, a puff timer.

There are definitely other mods out there that have all the above listed info available, but what makes the SMOK Alien special is that it displays all of it on the screen at the same time, instead of requiring you to go into the menu and check features like the puff counter or puff timer separately. This does have the small drawback of making the display seem cluttered and confusing at first, but once you get used to the positioning of each field on the display, you’ll start to appreciate the availability of all this data at the press of a button.

smok-alien-firing-bar

Right under the big display, you have two adjustment buttons, and a micro-USB port for firmware upgrades. The latter cannot be used for charging, so if you’re planning on getting the Alien and don’t have an external battery charger, I suggest you buy one of those as well. The small wattage/temperature adjustment buttons are made of plastic and are as stiff as the firing bar, so there’s no annoying rattling, even when you shake the device vigorously. The one thing I don’t like about them is that they lack the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ markings, so you don’t know which one is which. It’s not a big con, as you get used to them pretty quickly, but those tiny symbols would have made things a lot easier.

Another design aspect worth mentioning is the battery door on the bottom of the Alien 220W. After taking it out of the box, I immediately noticed that the door was unusually loose, and on one of the three devices I received, it even opened without me touching it. That was a bit disturbing, but it all made sense once I inserted a couple of 18650 batteries. The Alien relies on the pressure exerted by the batteries to hold the door in place, and once you press it down and inwards to secure it, the wobbling disappears completely. Also, another thing I appreciate about this device is the inclusion of a hinge for the battery door, so it doesn’t come off completely, like it use to on previous SMOK mods like the R200 and the H-Priv.

Lastly, on top of the Alien 220W, you have a classic 510 connection with a gold-plated positive pin. The connection is flush on the mod and is just deep enough for the TFV8 Baby Beast tank to screw all the way down, so you don’t have even the tiniest gap between it and the vaporizer.

The Menu

To access the menu of the Alien 220W, just press the firing bar three times in rapid succession. Once you’re in the menu, you can cycle through the main settings by pressing the firing bar once. To access a sub-menu, keep the firing bar pressed for one second.

smok-alien-display-info

The first main setting in the menu is “Mode”. Here, you can choose between wattage, temperature control and memory modes. In wattage mode, you can also select a SMOK vaping effect, from Soft, Normal and Hard. In Soft, the mod fires at 10% lower wattage than the current setting, for the first two seconds of the draw, while in Hard, it fires at 10% higher wattage. This basically allows you to customize your vaping experience.

In Temperature Mode, you have the option to select from three suported coil materials – Ni200, Stainless Steel and Titanium – as well as adjust the TCR or temperature coefficient for each of them. This is an advanced feature that I usually don’t mess around with, but if you know what you’re doing and the exact type of wire you’re using, I hear it can be pretty useful.

smok-alien-menu

Memory Mode allows you to save up to 22 different vaping settings, so you don’t have to make changes every time you change your atomizers. So if you have three different tanks, every time you switch between them, all you have to do is select their preset memory mode instead of adjusting the mod settings. It’s a pretty nifty feature that I found myself using a lot more that I thought I would.

The next main menu setting is “Puffs”. Here you can reset the puff counter, set a maximum number of puffs for day (once you reach it the mod will not fire anymore), set it to display the number of puffs you have taken since the last reset, or simply disable the puff counter.

smok-alien-screen

In “Settings”, you can adjust the screen time, lock the screen, adjust the brightness of the display, adjust the initial resistance of the atomizer (for advanced users), or download any available updates for the device. For this last one, you have to connect it to a computer and use the SMOK app.

Finally, “Power”, allows you to shut down the Alien 220W for when you don’t plan on using it for a long time. I personally never turned it off completely, just locked it by pressing the firing bar five times in rapid succession, to prevent accidental activation.

Performance

I have been using the SMOK Alien kit for about two weeks now, and so far I’ve encountered no major issues. The long firing delay that used to plague SMOK vaporizers in the past is no more – something I also noticed in my recent review of the OSUB Plus – it works great in wattage mode and seems to be pretty accurate, just like other recently released SMOK mods. Does it really go all the way up to 220W? Well, you can scroll all the way up to that with the buttons, but I couldn’t tell you if that what the power output is when you vape. I personally never feel the need to go over 100W, so I’d never even dream of using it at maximum output. I just don’t feel the need for that much power, and suspect very few vapers actually push these mods to their limits.

I’ve never been a big fan of temperature control, but I always make it a priority to at least test one of the supported materials, just to see if they work as advertised. For the Alien 220W, I used a stainless steel wire for the cotton taste, and it did not burn. As I gradually increased the temperature settings, there were some light brown marks on the cotton where it touched the coil, but that’s perfectly normal. As long as the cotton doesn’t catch fire, there’s no need to worry. For Ni200 and titanium, you’ll have to do the test yourself, as I don’t use either of them. For what it’s worth, with all the controversy regarding those materials at high temperatures, I think you’re better off with stainless steel anyway.

smok-alien-connection

There have been a few reports of misfires with the Alien, but I’ve never had any such issue. The firing bar is rigid but very responsive, as are the two adjustment buttons. I even tested the short-circuit protection to see if it would fire, and I got the warning message on the display as soon as I squeezed the firing bar. The reverse battery protection works perfectly as well, and there are other safeguards that I haven’t tested – weak battery protection, high battery voltage protection , low atomizer resistance protection, high atomizer resistance protection, system overheating protection, and low e-liquid protection for temperature control mode.

The tank

The SMOK TFV8 sub-ohm tank was hailed as one of the Chinese company’s best ones yet, and the TFV8 Baby Beast is a miniature version of it with equally impressive qualities. It has the same design as the TFV8, the same SMOK patented top-filling system with the hinged swivel cap, and two large adjustable airflow slots on the base. It comes with a standard 510 delrin drip tip that’s heat resistant and prevents lip burns even at high wattages, and two Baby Beast coil heads – one with a vertical coil (0.4Ω) and another with smaller quadruple coils (0.5Ω) for a more restrictive draw but equally impressive vapor production.

smok-baby-beast-coils

For a tank bundled in a kit, the Baby Beast is among the best right now. SMOK is well known for the wide variety of coil heads and RBA bases it produces for every one of their tanks, so you can expect to find at least one to suit your vaping needs.

The only small drawback of the TFV8 Baby Beast is the relatively low e-liquid capacity – 3ml. That’s actually decent for most tanks, but SMOK tanks are notoriously thirsty, and the Baby Beast is no exception. If that’s a problem, you can always use a different tank with the Alien mod, as you’ll be happy to know it’s perfectly compatible with 24mm tanks as well. I find myself having to refill it about every couple of hours, but the insane amount of vapor I get from it is totally worth the trouble.

smok-baby-beast-tank

Conclusion

The SMOK Alien kit is a really solid package. The 220W mod is among the most compact in the dual-18650 mod market, the design is outstanding in my opinion, and it just has a quality feel to it. It’s also about as feature-rich as mods can get nowadays, unless you’re the kind of guy who likes gimmicks like Bluetooth connectivity and flashing colored lights – in which case I recommend the SMOK X Cube 2. The Baby Beast is a great addition to the large family of SMOK tanks, featuring a mess-free refill system, ample airflow control, and a wide variety of coil-heads.

If you’re planning on an upgrade and are on the lookout for a high-quality 2-in-1 kit, I definitely recommend the SMOK Alien.

I just started vaping and was told that the smok alien would be the best choice and I couldn’t be happier. I was a pack a day 20 plus year smoker and I’ve been cigarette free for 2 weeks. I love the smok alien and love vaping. 5 stars!!!

Iam very upset about the one I received . I have only used a few times and it is completely dead .It would not turn on at all even tho the batteries were fully charged . I would never buy again . I am happy with my Kangertech, I have three
and they have never failed .

      • Aaron jones says:

I had my alien for about 3 months and it worked fine. Then one day the screen went blank for no reason. It still worked but blank screen. Now when puffs are full it won’t fire and I can’t see what I’m doing to reset puffs. So its basically useless. I got lucky once and reset puffs blindly. But only once now its dead weight. I cannot find any help how to fix it.

        • Andrew says:

If the screen is blank try hitting the fire button 3 times fast see if it goes to the menu then go to setting and try the screen timer. Not sure if there would be any possible way to change that from your pocket though.

Mine charges through the mini USB?

Great mod and tank. Only downside being the small capacity of the beast mini.

    • GK says:

I read someone say that they charge their Alien via usb. From what I have been told, you shouldnt do that because its extremely bad on the batteries and weakens them over time, the usb should be used for updating firmware only, not sure how true it is but its just what iv heard from a few people and common knowledge. Iv had mine for a little over a month now with no problems, still working out kinks with the t12 coil and only because I switched to the TFV12 tank instead of the Baby Beast. Other than that it burns great!

JUNK! Early this n this piece of crap started not turning back on after changing batteries. I have been battling this problem all along and never knowing if just changing batteries means it’s done and over and I have to buy another. Finally today this junk will not turn back on. I am tired of battling this and want to make sure my review is out there. JUNK!

I bought the Smok Alien from a reputable seller on eBay. It has been great! 2 weeks in and 1000 puffs later and absolutely no issues. Use any PG/VG mixture, I stick with max VG. Nothing clogged, no burnt coils, no problems. Proper use is key! I recommend this for anyone, new to vaping or experienced.
I use two Name Brand 3000 mah 3.7V batteries. A proper charge(use external charger) will last 3+ days! I tried replying to donna and Razvan

the best batteries I found for the Alien vape kit, are Imren 3000mah 30a/45a gold. costly battery, but well worth it.

    • GK says:

As Previously stated, From what iv read anything in the 18650 range for batteries will work, I currently have a pair of Efest batteries in right now, dont remember the specs but i got 2 other sets of batteries that are made by IMREN and they work just as well, They are Max 40A 3000MAH IMR 18650 at 3.7v I matched those batteries closest to the EFEST ones i got with the Alien kit I bought. Also as previously stated, BUY A CHARGER!!!! Dont try to charge the batteries with the mod itself, I read its really bad for the batteries and can cause issues like killing the batteries more each time. As far as im concerned the micro usb on the device is nothing more than a Firmware updater, EVEN with its capacity to charge.

  • Anthony says:

Can anyone tell me what settings I should use for different coils.

As Well as what it should be set on.
I seem to be burning thru coils too fast.
And burning I mean actually turning black at the top.
    Should I vape at watt?
    Or Temp?
    Also coil settings?
I’m confused and would really like to learn how to get the best flavor and vape experience out of my.

    • James says:

You have to read the side of the coils if they are premade they will have low to high as well as suggested watts. If you build your own you need an ohm tester and more info then I can give to determine watts or temps etc…

    • Vranks says:

Are you sure it’s not in stealth mode? Try pressing the fire bar three times rapidly and see if the menu shows up on screen. Then go to “settings” > “scr time” > and set stealth to “off”. If that doesn’t work, the display is probably broken and you should turn it in for a new one or your money back.

How do I charge this device? I was told I could use the microUSB port. The screen times out shortly after i plug it in and does not continue charging the batteries inside. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for the help

    • Vranks says:

That USB port is for firmware upgrades only, so it doesn’t work for charging. You need an external battery charger, like a Nitecore. Newer SMOK devices, like the G-Priv 220W have balanced charging technology, so you can charge two batteries in series on board the mod, but the Alien does not. Without balanced charging, charging series batteries inside the device poses a safety risk.

I’ve had the Alien mod for 2 weeks and I love it. I’m using the Cloud Beast rather than the Baby Beast because I like the higher capacity tank and the higher vapor production. I have tested the USB port for charging capability and it DOES charge the batteries. When you first plug the mod in to your charger the battery indicators on the screen will begin flashing, showing that it is charging. If you leave it sit for a full minute the display will change to a battery charge display and you can see what percentage of charge the lbatteries have reached.

    • GK says:

My understanding of the Alien mod is that the micro usb port on it is used strictly for updating the firmware not for charging it, Though it does charge, everything iv researched and read on the topic states that it can really damage the batteries and cause serious problems later on from that alone, Also ready a rumor that it can burn out the OLED screen on the mod (Not sure how true that is but anythings possible)

I bought the Vapinplus Pen from Rite-Aid Pharmacy in New Jersey. I LOVE THE PEN. But then I expanded my VAPING ADVENTURE and came across the Smok Alien 220. I actually did no research what so ever on this product. I went to a VAPUNG SHOP that only deals with Liquids and vaporizers. For $102.00 bucks I got the Smok Alien 220 and it’s fucking awesome. I never wanted to try another brand after using this product. To cut things short because I’m a 1st time vaporereer. BUY IT, EASY TO USE AND WORTH THE MONEY

    • Vranks says:

I agree, the Alien is a great mod, I still use it on a regular basis, I’ve dropped it more times than I can count – once on the road while cycling at high speed – and it still works like a champ. You did pay a bit too much for it, though, you can find it at around $60 – $70 online. You may want to do a bit of research next time, it will save you some serious dough.

do i have to put a wick in before i use the kit? how often do you have to change the coil head?

    • Vranks says:

If you have the kit – meaning it comes with a tank – you have a coil head pre-installed in the tank and another spare one in the box. If you’re using it with and RDTA, yeah, you have to install some coils and use cotton wick.

  • jess says:

I recently bought the alien. Today I changed my coil now I can’t get my settings to how they initially were. When I take a drag it barely lets any vape out. HELP

    • Vranks says:

Well, what you need to do is get informed on resistance, voltage, amps, etc. There is a bunch of info available online (just google “vaping ohm calculator”) and you really NEED to know this stuff to use such advanced devices safely. Regulated mods like the Alien have all sorts of built-in protections to prevent accidents, but you shouldn’t abuse them. So get to reading 🙂

I have the smok alien kit, it can be charged via USB and charges both battery’s equally and it also comes with a screen protector you have to apply yourself. This is by far better than any other mod I have owned and I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys vaping.

  • Wyatt Lamore says:

Piece. Of. Junk. I’ll never buy another Smok product for as long as I live. And that is a guarantee. I’ve had mine for all of 4 days and already the entire thing is completely covered in scratches, and I haven’t even taken it to work yet. And don’t say I’m too rough with it because I take great care of all of my devices. My rig mod v2, my fu, my panzer, and my rx200 all look as if they were just opened. And I’ve had the rx200 for a year. Another thing is the POS only recognizes when I change coils about 30% of the time. And I think I am being generous with that number. Also, I decided to give the other coil a try that came with the device after I used my RDA for a day, and surprise surprise! I get a shit ton of sizzle with no vapor whatsoever. Not even enough to satisfy this mouse I’m about to feed to my snake. The vapor is entirely non-existent. And don’t ask if I got it wet. No. I did not get it wet, although I cannot say the same about your mom. I got her extremely wet. But the coil? No. It stayed in the box until I tried using it. Maybe I’ll get lucky and my battery’s will explode and destroy the device. One can only hope!

      Wyatt,
I agree the Smok Tank sucks fucking ass, yes thats right, all this piece of shit does is LEAK. Smok tells ke to bring it back to where I purchsed it and believe they really did a good job as far as CUSTOMER SERVICE is concerned but the fucking tank leaked 3 hours after they replaced the coil, o-rings and whatever the fuck else is in there. They even REPLACED THE WHOLE BABY BEAST TFV4NTANK that Smok RAVES ABOUT. THEY can go and stick it up their FUZZY ASS and I hope someone from SMOK READS THESE REVIEWS, I’M FROM JERSEY AND I DON’T CARE, WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO SCREW YOU THATS NOT RIGHTFULLY GOOD. Sounds like user error. No one else is having such issues. Maybe you should take better care of your devices and learn to use them properly. FYI they included a manual in the box for this reason.

  • James says:

I have just recently bought an alien 220w charged the batteries out them in and it worked, went back to it after a few hours and nothing, tried charging the batteries again and still nothing, the batteries are the right way round, tried plugging it into my laptop to upgrade the firmware but still nothing, it’s just a black screen, any ideas?

  • memesmoker says:

I just got the Alien 220 and im using the smok 8 vaporizer, but it stops after 0.75 seconds of use. it says low battery, but both batteries are on 50%. do i have to load them to 100% for the start?

    • Vranks says:

does it say “weak battery” by any chance? If so, that is a built in protection of the device. What amps are you generating when you push the fire button (it’s displayed on the screen of the Alien)? My guess is that the batteries are discharging at a very high rate, and the mod is just doing what it’s supposed to in this situations. What batteries are you using?

I SEE YOU KNOW A LOT ABOUT THIS, SO I FIGURED I’D SEE IF YOU CAN HELP ME. I’VE HAD MY ALIEN OVER 3 MONTH WITH NO PROBLEMS UNTIL TODAY. I USED IT AT WORK THIS MORNING BUT WHEN I WENT OUT TO USE IT AGAIN, IT WAS DEAD. NO POWER. I HAVE CHANGED THE BATTERIES EVEN THO THE OTHERS WERE 3/4 CHARGED, I’VE CHANGED THE COIL, I HAVE TRIED TO CLICK 3 TIMES TO CHECK AND MAKE SURE IT WASN’T IN STEALTH MODE, IT DOESN’T EVEM COME ON FOR THAT. I’VE CONNECTED IT TO MY COMPUTER TO TRY AND UPDATE FIRMWARE, STILL DIDN’T COME ON. DO YOU KNOW OF ANYTHING ELSE I CAN TRY. I HAVE OTHER VAPES, BUT THIS IS MY FAVORITE. I READ ONLINE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THESE ALIEN 220W. ANY SUGGESTIONS WPI;D BE APPRECIATED.

        • Vranks says:

Unfortunately, it sounds pretty bad. To be honest, mine gave out last week as well. It just shut off and won’t turn on anymore. To be fair, though, I had been using it very heavily, I dropped it more times than I can remember, once on the pavement while riding a bike, so it could have been a consequence of stress. In your case, I don’t know what the problem was, but if it doesn’t power on, it’s probably just dead. You should try taking it back to the vendor for a new one if you still have the warranty.

  • memesmoker says:

im using normal 18500 that are recommendend. i charged both batteries to ca. 80%, and the error is gone now 😀 but thank you really much for your reply 🙂

    • Vranks says:

You’re welcome. You should know that there are several types of 18650 batteries. Just because they all look the same doesn’t mean they are rated the same. Apart from mAh capacity they also have a specific max amp. discharge threshold. You need to use batteries with a discharge limit of at least 25A. This is for your own safety. Take care!

    • Brandon says:
      5 stars

Ur using the wrong batteries. It is clearly stated that two 18650’s are what’s supposed to be used. Not 18500’s. there’s ur problem.

  • memesmoker says:

im using the NCR18650B batteries. are they safe to use in the smok alien 220V??

    • Vranks says:

Well, yes and no. This is a quality Panasonic battery with 3400 mAh capacity, but a low amp limit (10A). If you’re only vaping at around 50W – 60W, you should be okay, as long as you don’t chain vape too much. But if you run low sub-ohm coil builds at high wattage (70W or more), you should look into getting some high discharge batteries with an amp limit of 25A. You’re lucky to be using a quality regulated mod that actually protects you by shutting off power is the stress on the batteries is too great, otherwise…

I suggest reading up on battery safety, it’s important stuff to know when suing advanced builds and devices. There are tons of resources online (just use Google) and it will keep you safe. Cheers!

  • memesmoker says:

What batteries could you recommend me for the smok alien 220W?

    • Vranks says:

I’m currently using LG HG2 3000mAh 20A batteries, but there other great choices, like the Sony VTC4/VTC5 (look out for counterfeits, though). Good luck!

    • Tyler says:
      5 stars

Look for Samsung 25r’s or brown lg’s. Those are your best bet for batteries in my opinion. Also bearded vape has amazing juice.

  • Robyn Adina says:

I just got my new alien 220w TC right now I am using the V8 baby T8 I have a few questions my atomizer says 0.15 and then I think it’s an om symbol the upside down horseshoe symbol then it says 50 to 100 Watts best is 6280 Watts I was wondering how you lower your atomizer resistance because somehow I didn’t and now I can’t undo it I’m also confused about how the mode what mode temp mode memory works

    • Vranks says:

you can’t lower the resistance of the atomizer, not really. You can adjust it from the mod settings, but you’re not really changing it, you’re just telling the mod what resistance it should fire for. But that’s not recommended unless you really know what you’re doing. I usually trust the mod to tell me the actual resistance of the coil. They usually get it right or are really close. Yes that “omega” symbol is resistance. But that 6280 Watts can’t be what it actually says. Take a better look, my guess is 60 – 80 Watts. Which is what you should set the mod to. Hope this helps.

      • Ian Yates says:

Hi, you seem to know a lot about this so hoping you can help. I’m using the alien with a cloud beast and a v8-t8 coil (0-15). I vape for about 1.5s and the mod reads 30c on the pcb and 29.5 amps. Is this normal as I’m sure my last coil (also 0.15) was about 20c and 6.5 amps? Thanks

        • Vranks says:

Yeah, those amps are a bit too high, to be honest. You should be fine is you use the mod in short bursts, but still, you are the batteries a bit too much, in my opinion. I don’t know what kind of batteries you’re using, but I suggest lowering the wattage so you get around 25 amps, just to be sure. The temperature seems normal.

I have that same one .. one of the pre made coils is .15 and .. actually all the coils are really low ohm and you’ve got to go high VW so that might be right. I’m not as knowledgeable as you from what I can tell but I don’t think this and many other high power devices should be used by just anyone and it sounds like that’s where a lot of these problems come from. Thankfully it’s a safe device for that reason.. props to you as well for giving some well needed advice.

          • Vranks says:

I full-heartedly agree that they should not be used by just anyone, they are called “advanced mods” for a reason. But a lot of people don’t understand the risks that they are exposing themselves to, the damage an 18650 batter can do if it goes haywire. I always advise my friends and the readers of this site to educate themselves on battery safety and electrical current in general (amps, watts, ohms, etc.). The Alien and other regulated mods do have built-in protections, but one should not rely solely on them. If the amps are too high, you’re going to stress the battery if you keep vaping, and it may start to vent and eventually blow up (when you least expect it).

  • Darrel says:

I just got mine today and I can’t get the up button to work. I have upgraded it and it still isn’t working. Am I missing something???

So far so good. 2 days smoke free. — For the person who asked about burning. Open the air vent on the baby beast. If you use it without some kind of airflow it gets super hot, and produces less vapor. I do not know exactly what the air intake is supposed to do, but for me I think of it as a way to make more vapor, and determine the heat of the vapor.

Also you can go into settings and adjust the hit’s from normal or hard to soft. Not sure what it does, but I heard it determines how hot the vapor is.

    • Yert says:

Try either turning the wattage/temp down or opening up the airflow on the tank.

I just received my SMOK Alien Stormtrooper edition. While I am completely satisfied with the build quality, ergonomics and overall aesthetics I am, however, somewhat underwhelmed with the color scheme. It shouldn’t be classified as a storm trooper mod because it’s not very stormtroopy. Stormtroopers are primarily white with black lines. This could have easily been remedied by using a white panel in place of the black carbon fiber panel on the back.

Overall I love this mod! And just incase you might be thinking I was coerced under duress by my girlfriend to write about the lack of ‘Stormtroopiness’ I can assure you I was not. Completely my own complaint. Seriously.

Yes, checkout the coil that you are using because certain coils require SPECIFIC SETTINGS on your Mod. If you are using the tank that came with your Smok Mod, do your self to save a whole lot of WASTED JUICE, TIME AND MONEY BECAUSE THE SMOK TANKS LEAK. Get your self a Clieto Aspire tank that recommends a 55 to 70 watt output. Try it

I bought the Smok Alien 220W Starter kit and the mod is awesome, even if this is my 1st vaping experience. I have read a whole lot of reviews and to me it’s about 1 of the best. However the TFV4 BABY BEAST SUCKS MY FUCKING ASS. Yes you read that right, I bought this item on 12/07/2016 and 3 DAYS AFTER USING THIS TANK IT DID NOTHING BUT LEAKED. The language I use does not even compare to my situation. 1st off to call SUPPORT YOU HAVE TO CALL CHINA, WHO NEVER ANSWERS THEIR CALLS. Than I was told to call ModVapes and they said to bring it back to Vapen Plus in Roselle, New Jersey, where I purchased the SMOK ALIEN 220W and believe me they know their shit and yes they did right thing AFTER REPLACING THE ATOMIZER 3 TIMES AND THE WHOLE “BABY BEAST TVF4” ONCE It worked fine for 1 Day thats it. I have finally gotmso FUCKING FED UP WITH SMOK AND THEIR 3RD PARTY ASS WIPES, I BOUGHT A CLIETO ASPIRE TANK COMPLETE WITH EVERYTHING I NEED TO VAPE. It’s AWESOME compared to the Smok Tank. What I need to know, has anyone else have this problem???

I just bought the Smok Alien 220W today and it’s like it’s sucking the juice out. With other mods I’ve only had to fill up once a day. Today I’ve done it 3 times already. Is this just what it does, or do I need to do something different?

    • Yert says:

That’s just how the tank is. It’s made to produce more vapor, which uses more juice. You can either turn the power down some or switch to a different tank. One of your old ones that you’re used to should work.

    Hi ,
I’m new to canping. I’m using it as an alternative to smoking other substances. I like to hit back to back , and I use it often… However it’s about every 2 days that I am winding up with a burnt cool.. I’ve tried speaking to the lady at the vape shop I got it from about this, but she’d pedant seem to understand either!! Can someone give me advice on what I am doing wrong maybe what coil I should get I like smoking at 50-70 watts?? I’d like to even maybe go higher… I’m just so tired of taking that puff full of burning throat flavor!! I har the alien 220 mod. Everything else is great on it

    • Yert says:

That tank is made to produce large amounts of vapor, in turn using more juice. Raising the wattage will just make it worse. The small tank capacity doesn’t help either. I like my cleito 120 a lot. You either need something with a larger tank, or something that is used at a lower wattage. Just keep in mind, anything advertised as “high wattage” or “max vapor production” will burn through juice rather quickly. Hope this helps.

    • Yert says:

Oh and also, you shouldn’t be burning coils that quickly. Try to either lower wattage, open up your airflow some, adjust pg/vg ratio of your juice, or use juice with less sweeteners in it. The sweeter juices tend to gunk up coils

Can someone tell me why my smok Alien 220 is randomly changing ohms on its own ? This is the third time it’s happened in two weeks. I’ve had a quintuple coil in and it did it and ‘re inserted the coil and then slowly brought the ohms down.it won’t let me take them down .050 at a time. I still have time to return for manufacturer defect. I think I may do that but I love it. Any help would be great.

  • Gerry says:

Hopefully u can tell me y its just telling me low ohm and wont fire can you please help can it b fixed my other one works super but y is my other one saying that it looks brand new not a scratch on it but didnt buy it frm store I got it from a friend of a friend

    • Vranks says:

well, first of all, what resistance (ohms) does the mod show? It has a minimum resistance setting, and if your build is lower than that, it won’t fire for safety purposes. If we’re talking about a SMOK coil, that shouldn’t be the problem. If it does this with any coil (different resistance), it may be a mod defect.

      • Gerry says:

ya it does it with all coils that I try even with the smok on it and it always shows 0.000(ohms)it wont let me change the settings I guess its the mod then, that sux

I recently started with box mods since december. I was originally on the kangertech mini togo, hadn’t picked up another cigarette since. I felt the togo was a bit small though and not having much control of how much power I could vape was a bummer. so when I decided to upgrade I seen the Alien 220 in my local vape shop. total pakage was 130 bucks but I’ve had it for over 3 weeks now and I’m still loving it. I’ve changed the coils twice with no issues and I’ve even dropped my percentage of nicotine. it’s a bit more advanced for someone, like me but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. even getting a silicone case soon to help it from getting scratchhed. if your a beginner of box mods try something else but for more advanced vapours this is defiantly the mod to look into.

    • Vranks says:

I’m really glad you like it, but did you just say you paid “130 bucks” for it? As in dollars? Even if they included a couple of batteries, it’s still not worth that much. I’m all for supporting local businesses, especially vape shops, but that’s double the going rate for the Alien kit. I suggest looking online when you decide to get another device, it’s WAY cheaper. Frankly, no mod I can think of is worth 130 bucks.

I need help with my alien 220watt mod. For some reason it keeps bringing up the message don’t abuse products on the screen when I hit it and I don’t know how to fix it. I’ve tried taking out the batteries then putting them back in and taking off the tank and putting it back on but nothing is seeming to work I’ve even just slightly unscrewed it a little to see if it was the connection but nothing has seemed to work because I had also seen the short circuit icon show up on my screen but it was working just fine when I got it then just decided to screw up for no reason. Also BTW I had just boughten this a day ago and was working fine at first.

    • Vranks says:

I’m pretty sure that there’s nothing wrong with your mod. It’s just protecting you, as it was designed to do. You either still have a short-circuit (are you suing standard SMOK coils or did you build your own?), your batteries are depleted, or the amps are too high to vape safely. What kind of 18650 batteries are you using. Do you know their max burst amp discharge limit?

  • James says:

I bought an Alien 220w and this is my first time buying a Vape. The guys in the store wasn’t much help on going over everything. My question is about the batteries. I bought 5800 mAh 18650 3.7v batteries. Can anyone tell me if these are safe to use?

    • Vranks says:

hmmm, 5800 mAh sounds impressive, but I don’t know of any such high capacity batteries that have a high discharge limit. The mAh rating refers to how long the batteries last, but what you really care about when using them with a high-power vaping mod is the continuous and burst discharge amperage. I seriously doubt that these batteries, whatever brand they are, have a high discharge limit. You want it to be at least 20 Amps.

I’ve been saying this would be a problem for awhile…too many people new to vaping are picking up mods like this one and don’t know anything about Ohms law, battery safety or even basic functions of their device. People, listen…if the shop u bought it from didn’t explain much or u bought it online, go to YouTube and watch some of the many tutorial videos showing u all the features of this mod. It’s not good when u have people using a 220W device (thankfully regulated) asking how they change their resistance or using 10A batteries in a high power mod like this. YouTube and Google are your friends people lol. And go look up an article about volts, battery safety and ohms law. You need to be educated before you use devices like these. I watched & read about 3 solid days worth (72hrs) of videos, reviews, tutorials & articles about all kinds of mods, tanks, batts, basic electrical knowledge and safety before I ever even bought a vaporizer. Educate yourselves guys & girls, your experiences vaping will be more pleasurable and you’ll be able to use any mod with confidence or even get into building once you have some basic electrical & battery safety knowledge. The more you know! Lol

Nice Tank but if you have an issue you will never get help from customer service.
The system is good but the baby tank is way too small and their customer service is awful. I bought one in march. The tank was too small so I bought The Cloud Beast tank so I could get through the day without refilling it. The new tank popped out the 510 connection pin and I had to send it back. After more then 6 weeks and trying to contact Madvapes/SMOK via email several times with no reply I finally called to find out that my system is on back order. They are so busy filling orders that those of us who already paid for they system and had a problem are being made to wait. Good system but not worth the frustration.

  • Tyler Walters says:

What is the best settings to set all my setting for my smok alien 220 Watt?

    • Vranks says:

It depends on the resistance of your atomizer and your personal preference, there is no such thing as “best setting”.

      • Tyler Walters says:

        power range: 6W – 220 W
        voltage current: 0.35V-8V
        resistance range: 0.06ohms-3ohms
        temperature range: 200 Degrees F -600 Degrees F

        • Vranks says:

Yes, those are the technical specification for your mod. What you need to do is check the resistance of your tank’s coil head – it’s usually stamped on them, just look for the “omega” symbol – and then use an ohms calculator – google it – to find out what wattage you should set your mod to. This is an advanced device, and even though it has several protection features, you can still ruin your coil heads if you set the wattage too high.

Smok is the absolute worst tank I have ever used. Bought the Smok Alien and it starting separating on me to the point it would no longer work. Person at shop said I must have dropped it. No, I did not. Ended up buying the next model. The one where that lights up. Both leaked juice. Took to the store after it stopped working. Said it was because ‘I’ let juice get into the electronics of the unit. Told him it constantly leaks. He replaced the unit which was great. I bought a new tank as well, thinking this would solve the problem. Nope. Still leaks all the time. Went to a tank I had used for nearly two years with my old Aspire unit. It now leaks on this unit. Smok sucks! I should not have to keep going through units that burn out, leak and fall apart. I am not at all rough on them and I baby them hoping not to have issues. Nothing works. They simply make a bad product.

Really happy with the product. But the baby beast tank I’ve had no end of issues with the rubber seal on the tank- keeps popping out & hard to get back in.

The mod itself is very good but after a few months of using really does start to mark- all the paint has come off the area around the screen and the rest of it is looking quite shabby. If your going to buy one I’d suggest getting one of the rubber protectors!

the Smok Alien has good vape quality, However, EVERY person i know that has bought anything from Smok, the ring where the Tank screws in, always comes out. Requiring you to take the unit apart and re-solder everything and re-glue. Complete design flaw and they havent even fixed the issue in newer models. I do not reccommend any smok vape products. Just bought the identical Ikonn Eleaf 220 – looks identical, uses identical everything. Will not fall apart. Go with Ikonn and dont fall for the Smok Alien trap!

To bad this piece of shit will break down after a few weeks, all of the sudden the display will read OHM to low and there is nothing you can do to fix this worthless garbage, I am going to tell everyone I mean everyone on every medium not to buy this absolute piece of shit

I had the alien 220 for 3 months and it went dead. the dealer wouldn’t do any thing about it. I decided to mail order the next koopor I had for backup was about shot. I was reluctant to purchase another SMOK but
I did and it was haft the price as the alien, it is the procolor 225w and it has been the greatest Ionly wished that some one would stand behind the alien. I am going to order another procolor 225w so I have a back up.
