VooPoo Drag X Plus Review
VooPoo has been on a roll for over a year now, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. After taking the vaping world by storm with the awesome Drag X and S pod mods, then refreshing its dual-battery design with the Argus GT, the Chinese manufacturer is once again causing a stir with its VooPoo Drax X Plus, a 21700 mod that comes with a fresh tank and the new TPP coil-heads. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype:

VooPoo Drag X Plus Packaging and Presentation
The new Drag X Plus comes in a rectangular cardboard box featuring a large picture of the assembled single battery mod and TPP pod tank, on the front, and a list of kit contents, the usual age and nicotine-related warnings, manufacturer contact information and a scratch-and-check sticker.
Inside the box, we have the slick Drag X Plus 21700 mod, next to the new TPP pod tank, in a black Styrofoam holder, We also have an accessories box, which includes two new TPP coil-heads, a USB Type-C charging cable, user manual, and warranty card.
VooPoo Drag X Plus Design and Build Quality
When the Drag X and S pod mods came out last year, the thing that really blew everyone away was the sleek design, solid build quality and that nice high-quality leatherette. Don’t get me wrong, they also performed fantastically, thanks to a simple, yet effective, airflow control and the tried-and-true PnP coil-heads, but the aesthetics played a huge role in their commercial success. Believe it or not, VooPoo managed to do an even better job on the new Drag X Plus!
The Chinese manufacturer was wise enough to not implement huge design changes, maintaining the popular form factor of the original Drag X, and simply doing away with the top airflow control system and pod connection. The new Plus variant is a classic single-battery mod that can be used with virtually any 510 atomizer, which was one of the few gripes people had with last year’s pod mods. The new leatherette is even nicer than before, as well.
Starting at the top, we now have a classic 510 connection, with a gold-plated, spring-loaded pin, which accommodates atomizers up to 25mm in diameter without any overhang. You can get away with a 26mm diameter, but it’s overkill for such a compact device. The Drag X Plus is one of the sleekest 21700 mods I’ve seen, with only the Augvape Druga Foxy One being just slightly more compact.
The front panel, where we have the dire button, display, power adjustment buttons and the USB Type-C port has remained the same as on the original Drag, with the beveling of the buttons being the only noticeable change. On the bottom, we have a classic hinged battery door, which feels solid and locks into place after you insert the battery. The battery compartment has clear polarity markings and comes with a plastic sleeve for use with an 18650 battery.
While I loved the nice leatherette that VooPoo used on the original Drag X, the version I received for this review looks and feels even nicer. Called Prussian Blue, it’s a light blue with a smooth Alcantara texture to it. It’s more cushiony than the real thing, but that’s a plus in my book. I’ll have to wait and see how it holds up in the long run, but for now, I’m loving it!
You can still get the VooPoo Drag X Plus in the same style leatherette as the original pod mod, as the Chinese manufacturer offers plenty of different colors and textures, but I can tell you the Alcantara and the silver and blue combination work really well.
Some people may take issue with the fact that the new Drag X Plus features a lot of branding, but if you’re familiar with the Drag brand, you’ll know that has been the case since the original VooPoo Drag 157W mod. If anything, you could say VooPoo has scaled down the branding on this one.
All in all, in terms of design and build quality, the new VooPoo Drag X Plus is as good as, if not even a bit better than the Drag X and S pod mods.
VooPoo TPP Pod Tank
While there’s no denying the appeal of the Drag X and S pod mods, at the end of the day, users were limited to VooPoo’s PnP line of coil-heads. It is quite an extensive line, but still, a lot of people wanted to use the devices with their favorite atomizers. With the new Drag X Plus, you get to do just that, while still taking advantage of the awesome refillable pods, if that’s what you want.
That’s here the TPP Pod Tank comes in. It’s essentially the same style of pod we’ve seen before, just attached to a 510 base. It holds up to 5.5ml of e-liquid, features a detachable plastic drip tip, and is compatible with VooPoo’s new TPP coil-heads, a much beefier version of the PnP coils.
Instead of having the pod connection built into the body of the Drag X Plus mod, they created this 510 adapter for the popular refillable plastic pods, which attach to it via magnets. The stainless steel base features gold plated connectors as well as an airflow adjustment ring.
The pods are slightly tinted, and have a much larger coil-head port on the bottom. That’s because the new TPP heads are a lot larger than the PnP ones, so you won’t be able to use them with the older pods. What you can do though, is use the pods of the original Drag X, or of the Drag Max with the 510 base. So you can take advantage of the PnP coil-heads, you’ll just need a pod as well.
To be honest, I am not a huge fan of the TPP pod tank, at least in terms of looks. Its much too tall for a compact vape mod like the Drag X Plus, but that’s just the price you pay for added functionality. I’d much rather use the device with stubbier atomizers like the Wotofo Profile M, for example, but there’s no denying the convenience of using a refillable pod.
VooPoo Drag X Plus Menu System and Navigation
The Drag X Plus is powered by the same Gene Fan chip we saw last year, when I reviewed the excellent VooPoo Drag Max, so it has the exact same interface, menu system and navigation.
Instead of multiple vape modes, the Drag X Plus presents users with a simpler choice between two types of variable wattage. The device boots up in Smart Mode, the same advanced mode we’ve seen several times on VooPoo devices since the original Vinci pod mod hit the market. It reads the resistance of the coil-head you are using and automatically adjusts the power output accordingly, to prevent users from accidentally burning their coils.
By pressing the fire button three times in rapid succession, you will notice the color of the user interface on the display switch from yellow to blue, signaling that you’re now in RBA Mode, where there are no constraints in terms of power output. You can freely adjust the power to your liking.
There are a few secondary options available, like changing the theme of the display. Just keep the + and – buttons pressed for a couple of seconds and the option to select between the Core and Iron themes will show up on screen. Hover over the one you like, and then keep the fire button pressed until the choice is confirmed.
You can also lock the buttons of the Drag X Plus by keeping the fire button and the + button pressed at the same time, and reset the puff counter, by pressing the fire button and – button.
One annoying feature that I don’t remember noticing when testing the Drag Max is the automatic shutdown of the the device after about 20 minutes of inactivity. I get that it saves a bit of battery life, but having to turn on the mod after taking a short break from vaping can get annoying after a while.
VooPoo Drag X Plus Battery Life and Performance
The new Drag X Plus is compatible with 18650 and 21700 batteries. Just remember to use the included battery sleeve if you go for the 18650 option. Obviously, the bigger battery will give you a bit more battery life, but even with the 18650, the Gene chip does a great job of efficiently using power to keep you vaping for as long as safely possible.
Like the original Drag X and pretty much all other VooPoo vaping devices that have since the market since then, the Drag X Plus features a USB Type-C charging port, and comes with fast-charging at a rate of 2A. I never recommend on-board battery charging, but it’s nice to know fast-charging is available when you need it.
When it comes to performance, the Drag X Plus is about as good as we’ve come to expect from the Drag series over the many years it has been around. The original Drag and the Drag 2 were famous for having some of the fastest firing times in the vaping industry, and while most companies have caught up in recent years, the new Drag X Plus is impressively fast, with a quick power ramp-up to boot.
The new Drag X Plus may not have temperature control, memory mode, or any of the bells and whistles of most advanced vape mods, but it really doesn’t need them, in my opinion. It does wattage mode right, and that’s what the vast majority of vapers use anyway.
The new TPP pod tank and new coil-heads were also a very nice surprise. Let me put it this way, if you liked the PnP mesh coils for direct lung vaping, you’re going to love the new TPP ones. Both variants included in the kit – DM1 (0.15Ω) or DM2 (0.2Ω) – work very well, they are both mesh coil-heads, with the only difference being the wattage ranges they operate best at.
One of the innovations introduced by the new TPP coil-heads is the increased contact area of the cotton wicking with the juice in the refillable pod, which helps keep the cotton saturated, even when the coils are used at high power levels. This prevents dry hits and improves flavor, even when chain-vaping.
The new TPP pod tank and coil-heads are designed with direct-lung (DL) vaping in mind, and in that regard they work very, very well, producing impressive clouds of vapor and putting out the kind of flavor you could only get from drippers a while back. They are a great addition to VooPoo’s already impressive lineup of coil-heads.
MTL isn’t an option with the new types of coils just yet, but you can always use the PnP mouth-to-lung options, if you really want to, since the old pods are compatible with the base of the TPP tank.
Conclusion
Did we really need another Drag X right now? Well, while some would surely say ‘no’, I disagree, because the new Plus version earned its right to exist by doing away with the integrated pod connection and bringing back the old 510. This is one of the nicest, most compact single 21700/18650 vape pods on the market today, and that alone is enough for some people. Add the subtle yet fresh design changes, the stylish Alcantara imitation, and you have a winner on your hands. The new TPP pod tank and coil-heads are just a nice bonus.
The Drag X Plus kit was sent to me directly by VooPoo, for the purpose of this review.

is drag x plus for beginners?
To answer the question above NO it isn’t, although I can see some “newer vapers” giving it a go.
The real downside is the pod tank I really like the design of the Drag but I replaced the tank / coil for a Smok tank & coil …far far better than the pod …as has been said the auto shutdown is a pain but can be bypassed by holding down all 3 buttons when switching it on
