Uwell Aeglos Review

Uwell makes some of the best vape sticks and vape pods on the market, but when it comes to pod mods, the Chinese manufacturer hasn’t really shown its mettle yet. That was until recently, when it finally launched its Aeglos pod mod, a light and compact vaping device featuring top fill, replaceable PnP-style coil-heads, and a generous display. Let’s see if it can challenge the giant in the pod mod sector.

Uwell Aeglos Packaging and Presentation

The Uwell Aeglos pod mod comes in a black, rectangular cardboard box, with a picture of the device on the front, and a list of contents, age restrictions and nicotine warnings, as well as manufacturer contact information, on the back.

Inside the box, you’ll find the Aeglos pod mod sitting in a black Styrofoam holder, and a small box of accessories, where you’ll find an extra coil-head (another comes pre-installed), a small bag of spare o-rings, and a USB charging cable. Also in the box is a user manual, which I recommend you go over, especially if you’re new to vaping.

Uwell Aeglos Design and Build Quality

At first glance, the new Aeglos looks like just another VooPoo Vinci clone. Sure, the two devices are not exactly identical, but they share the same shape, are of similar size, and cater to the same audience. However, Uwell’s take on the popular design is a bit different, more efficient in some regards, and less so in others.

The battery unit of the Aeglos is fairly minimalistic. Apart from the side featuring the buttons and rectangular display, all there is to mention is the USB Type-C charging port on the bottom, and two airflow slots on opposite sides, near the top. Other than that, this is basically just a beveled rectangle with a pod attached to it.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the Aeglos pod mod is how light it is for its size. That’s because of the aluminum alloy that its battery casing is made of. It’s not a cheap lightness, but a comfortable one, so I’d definitely consider it a plus.

Both the fire button and the power adjustment buttons under the display are made of plastic, but they feel very solid to the touch, and make a nice click sound when pressed. The display, on the other hand, isn’t that impressive. It’s generous in size, bright enough, but it’s black and white and low-resolution. Compared to the screen of similar devices, like the SMOK RPM40 or the newer Smoant Santi, it just looks outdated.

Uwell Aeglos Pods

The pods of the the new Uwell Aeglos hold up to 3.5 ml of e-liquid, are compatible with replaceable Aeglos coil-heads, and are completely transparent, allowing users to keep an eye on the e-liquid level inside.

Unlike most other devices, the Aeglos doesn’t have a magnetic pod connection. The pods lock  onto the battery unit via two pieces of plastic on their sides, which click into two grooves on the inside of the pod mod. It requires a bit of strength to pull the pods off, but you can be sure that they will never come off accidentally.

Aeglos pods feature top fill, which translates to a diminished risk of leaking. To access the fill port, you just need to remove the black mouthpiece, like you do on the Vaporesso Xros or Vladdin Vantage pod systems, for example. Doing that can be a bit annoying, as it’s on really tight, but you’ll get the hang of it after a while. Just remember that you have to fill through the hole with a protective membrane on it, not through the central shaft.

While the pods themselves don’t have integrated airflow control, the Aeglos pod mod does. The pods actually sit on the airflow adjustment system, a wheel with instructions on how to open and close the airflow printed on it. By turning the wheel to the right or to the left, you can open and shut the two cutouts at the top of the mod, and adjust the amount of air that comes in.

The airflow system designed by Uwell is definitely superior to what the VooPoo Vinci and Vinci X had, but it’s not perfect. First of all, because it’s located under the pod, you need to remove the pod every time you want to adjust the airflow, which isn’t ideal. And then there is the fact that you can’t restrict the airflow to the point where you can do a proper mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw. A restrictive direct lung (DL) hit is possible, but that’s about as tight as the draw gets.

Uwell Aeglos Battery Life

The Aeglos pod mod features a built-in 1,500 mAh battery, same as the VooPoo Vinci. That’s more than reasonable for a device of this size. It also features fast charging via the new USB-C interface, and you can vape while the device is charging.

I can’t give you an accurate battery life estimate, because that depends on the set power output and how much you use the the device. What I can tell you is that for such a compact device, the Uwell Aeglos offers above average battery capacity.

Uwell Aeglos Features

Unfortunately, this is where the Aeglos falls short. Compared to its main competitors, which offer multiple vaping modes and smart features, like automatically adjusting the power to prevent damaging the coil-head, Uwell’s pod mod feels barebone.

It has adjustable wattage, with a range of 5W – 60W, but that’s basically all there is to it. You can lock either the fire button or the + and – buttons, and clear the puff counter through button combinations, but as far as features and settings, there simply aren’t any.

How Does the Uwell Aeglos Vape

Uwell is one of the most highly-regarded brands in the vaping industry, and for good reason. It has been around for a long time, and is responsible for some of the best vape pods and atomizers ever created. The Uwell Caliburn alone has become a phenomenon in the vaping community, but this company is also responsible for the Crown sub-ohm tank and the Nunchaku vape pen, among others. So you could say people have great expectations from the Aeglos.

Luckily, Uwell’s newest pod mod does not disappoint, at least as far as DL vaping is concerned. The new Aeglos mesh coil-heads are some of the best in the business, offering great flavor as well as above average vapor production. The 0.23Ω coil works best between 40W and 45W, whereas the 0.8Ω is best between 20W and 23W. The latter is designed for a more restrictive draw, but not truly MTL.

The truth is that even if Uwell offered a true MTL coil-head, the Aeglos couldn’t restrict the airflow enough for it. The airflow adjustment system isn’t really made for mouth-to-lung, as even closing it down completely doesn’t provide the necessary restrictiveness to pull off a true MTL draw. Believe me, I tried.

That said, this kind of device is designed with direct lung vaping in mind anyway, so you can’t really fault it too much for lacking true MTL capabilities. If anything, the fact that you can even di a restrictive lung hit should be lauded.

If the lack of MTL doesn’t bother you too much, I’m pretty sure you’ll love the Uwell Aeglos. Thee flavor you get from the coil-heads is nothing short of fantastic, vapor density is great, and I have no leaking or spitback issues to report. It works as advertised.

Conclusion

The Uwell Aeglos doesn’t really revolutionize the pod mod sector, it doesn’t introduce any new features or innovations, but it manages to take a tried-and-true formula and deliver a solid vaping performance. Could it be better in some respects? Sure, the airflow system is far from perfect and Uwell should really update that display, but when it comes to vaping, it’s right up there with the best in the business.

The Uwell Aeglos pod mod was sent to me by Health Cabin, for the purpose of this review. They currently have it in stock for $39.58.
